Some harsh criticism from GREGORY MOOMJY on Offenbach's 'La Périchole' at New York City Opera
It was an evening with so much potential that quickly degenerated into a series of what-ifs. Had New York City Opera been able to pull-off the new production of Offenbach's La Périchole, the last opera of the year [seen 23 April 2013], they would have achieved a perfect season. Had Christopher Alden's production been easy to follow it would have provided counter-balance to the high-tech digitally enhanced but poorly executed Ring Cycle currently at New York's other operatic giant, the Metropolitan Opera. Had the French dialogue not been interminable the operetta might have maintained its humor, which in turn would have been enhanced by Alden's typical edgy yet profound staging...
