In the seventeen eighties there was a great deal of talk about Pierre Beaumarchais' comedy, La folle journée, ou le Mariage de Figaro ('The Crazy Day or the Marriage of Figaro'). In 1781, in Paris, the censors passed it, but after King Louis XIV read the play, permission was rescinded. Meanwhile people talked of it and read it privately. When the play reopened three years later, it ran for sixty-eight performances...
