Seemingly everything John Cage wrote was somehow different. Schoenberg once said he was his most 'interesting' student, but an 'inventor' rather than a composer. His compositional technique evolved continuously and often anticipated future developments -- aleatory, improvisational, minimalistic, mathematical. So many of his works stimulated discussion by musicians, critics and other composers that many ardent collectors have read about him without ever having heard much, if anything, of what he actually wrote...
