As with most things during the reign of Louis XIV (1638-1715), music was also permeated by the grand and extravagant, but towards the end of the seventeenth century sacred music in particular started to veer towards a more moderately-scored language. This CD includes pieces by some of the most eminent composers of the time, and the programme is a mixture of the instrumental and polyphonic aspects of music making during that period.
The highlight is most definitely François Couperin's Trois Leçons de Ténèbres. Probably composed in 1714, these pieces are the only surviving compositions of what is believed to have been a set of nine...
