If a wine is crude or has gone bad or is simply undistinguished, one can tell immediately. If, however, one is dealing with wines of the highest level, comparing, let us say, several of the first- and second-growth Bordeaux of the same particularly good year, then the only way to appreciate them fully and to detect their individual characteristics and complexities is to try them side by side.
So says a wine expert, but he could have been talking about choosing a piano...
