Elgar conducted the first private performance of his Serenade for Strings, given by the Worcester Ladies' Orchestral Class. Its first public performance was in Antwerp, Belgium on 21 July 1896.

Sympathetically played though this duo piano version is, in my book it cannot compare with strings of the Sinfonia of London conducted by John Barbirolli (EMI Masters 6317882) or the English Chamber Orchestra with Paul Goodwin (harmonia mundi HMG507258).

Composer Frank Bury (1910-1944) was killed during the Normandy airborne landings...
