William Byrd was known to consort with Jesuits, but Queen Elizabeth decided very sensibly not to burn him. Instead she shrewdly asked him to set a poem of hers celebrating the defeat of the Spanish Armada, thus neatly squaring the religious circle. She must have relished his music, and may even have tried out his Sellinger's Rownde on her virginals. It's an entertaining enough piece; like everything else on this CD, it may as well be arranged for any combination of available instruments...
