From his early childhood till the years following World War II, Lutoslawski's life and work were shaped by two deadly wars, the dismantling of Russia's extravagant Tsarist regime and complex, fluctuating political allegiances between Poland, Germany and Russia. His father Józef and Józef's brother Marian were executed by Bolshevik firing squad in 1918.
In 1946 he married Maria Danuta Dygat Boguslawka (born Felin, Poland, 1911, died Warsaw, 1994). The marriage was a lasting one, and Witold on his close professional relationship with Danuta once remarked 'one of these days she will finish one of my pieces before I do'...
