Informative and Exhilarating
Chamber and instrumental music from China and elsewhere, heard by MARIA NOCKIN
On 12 December 2012, the Scottsdale Center for the Arts [Arizona, USA] presented Close Encounters with Music in a program called 'Trade Winds: From China with Love'. The artists were: Liu Fang who plays the pipa and guzheng, pianist Emma Tahmizian, violinist Hagai Shaham, and cellist Yehuda Hanani who also introduced the pieces. Tahmizian begain the concert with A la Chinoise, by the Ukranian-born American, Leo Ornstein, who lived an amazingly long time, from 1893 to 2002. With her precise and idiomatic playing, Tahmizian captured the Asian ambiance of the composer's Op 39 which delineates the raw musical impressions of his first visit to the 'Chinatown' area of San Francisco...
