The only Angelica I have met personally is known by those who liked her less than I did as 'Diabolica'. That seems an admirable name for the dreadful aunt of this opera, who is hardly more than a pantomime dame out of the top drawer, to be hissed off the stage as soon she appears. Meanwhile Puccini takes his usual delight in tormenting the lead soprano, in this case an admirable Kristina Opolais...
