Verdi's 'Aida', live in HD, reviewed by MARIA NOCKIN
Ismail Pasha, Khedive of Egypt, asked Giuseppe Verdi to compose a piece for the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, but the composer said he did not write pieces for special occasions. The Khedive then asked him to compose an opera to be performed in the Egyptian opera house in January 1871, to which the composer agreed after being sure he would be handsomely paid for it. French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette sent a scenario to Camille du Locle, one of the librettists for Verdi's Don Carlo, who showed it to Verdi. Since it was rich in detailed local color and had many opportunities for the expression of emotion, the composer liked it immensely...
