I was so enchanted with the recent athletic euphoria that I am seriously wondering about the possibility of future Geriatric Games, in which 'gold' would go to the slowest. Which brings me at once to the Cuarteto Casals. This fine team has most of the virtues one would expect: impeccable ensemble, just intonation, a rich variety of tone colours, and a youthful freshness of approach. But the two French quartets, which I happen to know well both as player and listener, are so hard-driven they lose much of their impact...
