The playing by Piers Adams on this CD is light years away from the breathy whifflings I used to make on similar instruments, or indeed from the virtuosity of a Carl Dolmetsch, who was the first to inspire me to test my own lack of skill. There is athleticism here worthy of Olympic gold, and I see no reason not to believe that the ancient Greeks would have approved musical competition at their games as readily as they approved the naked runner. The delights of the performance are such that I would gladly arrange almost anything for Mr Adams and his teams.
Only half the six Vivaldi concertos have titles...
