I owe Richard Strauss a major debt of gratitude, not only for a lifetime's cornucopia of music, but for first compelling me to take up a conductor's baton to perform his Metamorphosen almost in memory of him. I knew none of his music till I heard through an open window near the Suez Canal a recording of Don Juan. That was enough to inspire unswerving devotion. It is touching that the back of the CD should prolong Strauss's life until 1964; but he died, alas, in 1949...
