In his latter years, Edward Elgar amused himself by taking out all the 'nots' from the Commandments and slipping them into the Creed. He never set the result to music, nor indeed is this at all what Bernstein has done. But this Mass caused scandal enough to the Roman Catholic Church. It was commissioned by the Kennedy Center in Washington, where it was first performed as a piece of music theatre for singers, players, and dancers in September 1971...
