Christopher Gibbons had a very distinguished career in his own right, even if he was less fortunate politically than his father Orlando. Though organist at Winchester Cathedral when twenty-three, he had to stand by while Roundhead soldiers smashed the organs. At the Restoration, Charles II appointed him to both the Chapel Royal and Westminster Abbey. On 23 December 1666 Samuel Pepys 'went to the Chapel to find Dr Gibbons; and from him to the Harp and Ball to transcribe the Treble which I would have him to set a bass to.'
