Handel's 'Jephtha' at Buxton,
reviewed by MIKE WHEELER

Following last year's Saul, the Buxton Festival presents a staged version of another Handel oratorio, Jephtha (Buxton Opera House, Buxton, Derbyshire, UK, 8 July 2012), but the result couldn't be more different, since Frederic Wake-Walker's production is minimal to the point of austerity. It is, though, one of the most riveting theatrical events I've witnessed.

Jephtha rashly promises that if he wins a battle he will sacrifice the first living thing he sees on his return. As his daughter Iphis comes out to welcome him he realises his folly but insists that his vow must stand...
