PLAYING DEVIL'S ADVOCATE
BILL NEWMAN tells the story of his visit to London's St John's Smith Square to hear Idil Biret play Beethoven
My destination the other Saturday night (7 July 2012): St John's, Smith Square, London, SW1, for a concert by the Whitehall Orchestra directed by Michael Nebe with, as soloist, the Turkish pianist Idil Biret performing Beethoven's very popular Emperor Concerto with, in the second half, Gustav Holst's suite The Planets. The concert was due to begin at 19:30. The trouble is that I forgot that engineering works were taking place on London's Underground Tube network. A very hurried change of plan resulted in me bypassing Edgware Station and taking a 186 bus to Canon's Park instead...
