Italian baroque choral music, heard by MIKE WHEELER
The Sitwell Singers and conductor Malcolm Goldring put together an attractive programme of Italian baroque music, culminating in a delightful extended mass setting by Alessandro Scarlatti (St Mary's Church, Derby, UK, 23 June, 2012).
They began with a Magnificat, attributed to Pergolesi on very flimsy evidence but almost certainly by his teacher Francesco Durante. The singers had the measure of the music's character, from the bright, energetic opening to the solid impact of Fecit Potentiam, and the sonorous concluding Gloria...
