The Argentinean born composer Alcides Lanza turned eighty-three this month and our relatively limited experience of his music makes this superbly produced retrospective CD production a most welcome acquisition. Lanza spent his early musical life in Buenos Aires where he developed a particular interest in electro acoustic and microtonal work, enhancing his enthusiasms with a period of study as an electrical engineer in Rosario before gaining a Guggenheim Fellowship to support his appointment to the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Centre in 1965. After six years in the States and a further year in Europe, Lanza settled in Montréal, joining the staff at McGill to teach composition and eventually to direct the Electronic Music School. He remained there until his retirement in 2002, since when he has been vigorously active organising and conducting concerts of new music, composing and appearing as a solo and ensemble pianist...
