Starting out as a teenager in Tin Pan Alley, graduating steadily towards Broadway and eventually Hollywood, Gershwin was an outstanding pianist and song-writer. Yet it is a remarkable aspect of George Gershwin's highly successful career that he repeatedly felt the need to take lessons in composition. Even after the triumph of the Rhapsody in Blue, he took instruction from such teachers as Goldmark, Riegger and Cowell. Later still, during work on Porgy and Bess, he studied systematically with Joseph Schillinger...
