Shostakovich had a rough time from his Soviet masters. Twice in his maturity as a composer he was stopped in his tracks by official action. The first occasion was in 1936, when Stalin happened to be present in the Bolshoi Theatre at a performance of the opera, Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. He did not like the work at all (I have to admit it is not one of my favourites either), and Shostakovich was temporarily silenced...
