Mark Elder and the Hallé Orchestra,

Evenings of Russian music can be prey to relying on the well-worn and familiar, but with a substantial rarity at its heart, it's a temptation this concert by the Hallé Orchestra and conductor Mark Elder avoided (Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, UK, 18 May 2012).

The first half belonged to Borodin. The overture to Prince Igor began with some atmospheric scene-setting before moving vigorously into the quicker music, marked by the expressive warmth of Linsey Marsh's clarinet solo...
