'La bohème' at Los Angeles Opera, reviewed by MARIA NOCKIN
Henry Murger's writings about the Bohemian life in Paris of the 1840s are the basis for operas by both Giacomo Puccini and Ruggiero Leoncavallo. Puccini's La bohème was first seen in 1896 and Leoncavallo's opera of the same name was premièred the following year. Murger's stories were first serialized in the literary magazine, Corsaire. His hero, Rodolphe, is also a writer so the character is most probably autobiographical...
