Great Conviction

Mendelssohn, Mozart and Vivaldi
from Derby Choral Union,
reviewed by MIKE WHEELER

Mozart's Mass in C Minor may be incomplete but what there is, is a masterpiece. Derby Choral Union's performance (apparently only their second ever) with Musical Director Richard Dacey was well-grounded and often inspired (Derby Cathedral, Derby, UK, 21 April 2012). The Kyrie had great solidity and strength, there was a fine sense of build-up in Cum Sancto Spiritu, and a real frisson in the move from the Benedictus into the final Osanna...
