Sinfonia Viva contributes to the UK's 'Music Nation', reviewed by MIKE WHEELER
Sinfonia Viva's March schools' residency project this year was linked into the orchestra's contribution to Music Nation. Over the weekend of 3 and 4 March 2012 the BBC and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games presented a spectacular UK-wide weekend of music marking the count-down to the London 2012 Festival, the finale of the Cultural Olympiad.
Viva's project, with conductor Nicholas Collon at the helm, was built round Invocation, a new cello concerto by Tunde Jegede, soloist Matthew Barley, which also has an important part for solo dancer, Bode Lawal. In the Thursday concert (Assembly Rooms, Derby, UK, 1 March 2012) they were joined by four groups of local students, from Becket and Griffe Field Primary Schools, Murray Park School and Derby College...
