In England we have been brought up to wonder at Spem in alium, the 40-part motet by Thomas Tallis. It now seems certain that Tallis composed his work in direct emulation of Alessandro Striggio, who visited London in 1567 on diplomatic business for Cosimo I of Florence. The two men met, and it was wondered whether any Englishman could match the achievement of the Italian's multi-voiced works. Tallis did so, and it is fascinating to compare the different dispositions of their pieces...
