Verdi's Macbeth always presents a formidable challenge to stage. If the setting is too dark and claustrophobic, the dramatic impact dissipates altogether. If the two protagonists are not both singers and actors of the highest level, the opera will fall totally flat on its back. Thankfully, this stirring version of a 2011 production by the Royal Opera House has none of these misdemeanors...
