I've commented before on conductor Valery Poliansky's coolness and restraint. Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony would, on the face of it, seem to be the kind of work whose impact would be compromised by such an approach, but somehow it paid off. With a succession of fairly steady tempos, this was a detached, even classical reading from the Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra (Assembly Rooms, Derby, UK, 16 February 2012), that avoided treating the work as merely a raw emotional outburst...
