Philippe Gaubert was one of the early twentieth century's most skilled flutists. Later, in his forties, he became even better known as the principal conductor of the orchestras of both the Paris Opera and the Paris Conservatory, premiering some of the era's most lasting works including Der Rosenkavalier and Turandot. Today he is best known as a composer of chamber works for flute.
All of the pieces on this disc have been recorded before, but this is a fine, well-played collection, competitive, though with a caveat: the musicians perform on period instruments...
