When Stephen Chatman became Professor and Head of Composition at the University of British Columbia in 1976 he was only twenty-six years old. He still holds the post. Although he admits to a period of study with Stockhausen in Cologne, the interest must have been short lived, for his choral style, as demonstrated on this CD, is of a quite popular and easy style, bright, witty and a pleasure to sing and perform, undoubtedly receiving warm reactions from audiences, especially when the words are minimal as in Elves' Bells.The cycle of four songs that make up the title Due East is one of a series of cycles that have already given their names to previous CD issues -- Due North and Due West also recorded by the same choir...
