Hanson's symphonic cycle is regarded as one of the most important in American music, especially by Americans. The Third Symphony, composed between 1936 and 1938, is permeated with pervasive Nordic overtones, also apparent in his Symphony No 1 in E minor Op 22, 'Nordic' (1922).

Hanson's birthplace, Wahoo, Nebraska (population 4,500), a home community shared with 20th Century Fox founder Darryl F Zanuck (1902-1979), was not especially Swedish, however the state as a whole has sporadic Nordic associations and Howard's parents were an immigrant couple, Hans and Hilma (Eckstrom) Hanson.

The Swedish Midsommar Festival held in Stromsburg each June began when Hanson, composer, conductor and music theorist was fifty-seven...
