Jonathan Biss plays Beethoven, Chopin and Janácek, heard by BILL NEWMAN
I first heard this wonderful artist when he was invited to play at Gian Carlo Menotti's Spoleto Festival. A group of up-and-coming American musicians had been invited to visit this famous venue, and a midday series of recitals took place at the local concert hall that lies adjacent to the Catholic church in the Town Square. I had been invited by my UK contacts, James Lock, Decca Records and the Spoleto engineer, plus the actor Edmund Purdom, to cover the Festival for Music & Vision, and Maestro Menotti, who I had interviewed the year before, gave his blessings.
