With three works central to Mahler's lieder canon, Austrian mezzo Hermine Haselböck joins the ranks of artists who have recorded this music with voice and piano as an alternative to utilizing Mahler's fuller symphonic accompaniments.
Note writer Malcolm MacDonald observes that while in 'the piano versions we lose ... "the marvelously apt and piercing colours of Mahler's scoring" ... we gain, perhaps, a more immediate insight into the essence and structure of each song.'
