It does not matter in the least that the only actual cello pieces on this CD are in fact the least significant. Steven Isserlis, who played for me in Bach cantatas as a very young man, long before he adopted his present rather intimidating Medusa hair-style, has sensibly followed Schumann's suggestion in playing works originally for clarinet and horn. Why not adapt also the oboe pieces and Third Violin Sonata for the instrument he plays with such eloquence? Actually it should be 'instruments' as, like Jacqueline du Pré before him, he now has access to two Stradivari cellos...
