Liszt the wizard pianist started varying, transcribing, elaborating, fantasising on operatic excerpts in his teens and was still at it in 1883, when he tackled Verdi's Simone Boccanegra. It was no accident that he started with Rossini, who was all the rage at the time. Altogether he tackled some twenty-five composers, and twice that number of operas. His audiences relished his slants on hits of the day, and publishers were eager to snap up such marketable wares...
