Wigmore Hall recitals by Danny Driver, and by Jack Liebeck and Katya Apekisheva, admired by BILL NEWMAN
As envisaged, this first event [Danny Driver, Saturday 9 July 2011 at 7.30pm] actually surpassed my highest expectations. There is no doubt in my opinions -- this young man impressed me when I first heard him perform at St James' Church, Piccadilly, afterwards at a Keyboard Trust Concert at Steinways, then at the South Bank's Purcell Room. For a short time, Ravel's Gaspard de la nuit became his chosen 'signature tune'. Winning the Royal Over-Seas League Award and the 2001 BBC Radio 2 Young Musician of the Year happened in quick succession, while studies at Cambridge University and the Royal College of Music led eventually to the Aspen Music Festival and work at all the major venues, with orchestras numbering the BBC Scottish Symphony, the American Symphony, Opera North and the Louisiana Philharmonic. Hyperion Records then placed him under contract, with critical nominations flowing in so fast, I couldn't stop to count!..
