Timothy Byram-Wigfield plays the organ at Derby Cathedral and impresses MIKE WHEELER
Director of Music at St George's Chapel, Windsor, Timothy Byram-Wigfield began his recital (Derby Cathedral, Derby, UK, 13 July 2011) with music by one of his predecessors, launching into William Harris' rather Elgarian Flourish for an occasion with great energy.
He followed it with J S Bach's Prelude and Fugue in E minor, BWV 548, known as the 'Wedge' from the shape of its fugue subject, fanning out from a central note. This was rock-solid Bach playing with a sure sense of forward drive and some lovely liquid sonorities in the fugue's contrasting episodes...
