Wherever you may have stood in the digital-vs-analog arguments -- back before MP3s further muddled the choices -- there was no denying that CDs scored when it came to drawing superior sonic results from monaural studio recordings. Surely, neither of the famous recordings on this program ever emerged as vividly or clearly from LP grooves as they do here.
The renowned soloists notwithstanding, this reissue is, first and foremost, a tribute to the great Václav Talich. He was a renowned conductor and teacher -- although, with noted 'conducting teachers', one sometimes wonders the extent to which they discussed actual stick technique, as opposed to promulgating elements of musical style. But there's no mistaking Talich's command of that style: the shaping of phrases with an unfussy musicality, the occasional rubato sounding natural rather than labored...
