Instigator and presenter of the Musicalchemy DVD (above), violist and teacher Gillian Rogell has a smorgasbord of musical experience that speaks for itself. Yet in this hour and a half presentation we are witness to a duality which I found more than a little distracting.
On the one hand there is a self-aware Rogell addressing the camera as she outlines her methodologies and private views on chamber writing and performance in the 'Classical' genre.
And in marked contrast a more naturalistic Rogell (without the artifice) tutors largely young players in various groupings as they work at key compositions from the eighteenth to twentieth centuries.
Featuring as exemplars are The Jupiter String Quartet, formed in 2001 and consisting of violinists Nelson Lee and Megan Freivogel, violist Liz Freivogel and cellist Daniel McDonough...
