Alison Balsom plays Hummel's Trumpet Concerto, heard by MIKE WHEELER
Is there ever a temptation to treat a work like the Hummel Trumpet Concerto as a piece of jobbing hackwork for the orchestra, sit back and just let the soloist get on with it? If so, there was no sign of it on this occasion (Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, UK, 4 May 2011). The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Vasily Sinaisky invested the performance with real vitality by clearly taking immense care over details, and so giving Alison Balsom plenty to respond to (and they to her)...
