That admirable spur to adventurous music-making, The Well-Tempered String Quartet, envisages only two emergencies: the disappearance of a cello or viola. When both second violin and cello absent themselves in a huff, then it is indeed a third emergency, with the best bets being the Haydn brothers and Mozart. The Haydns are content to leave the viola subservient, but Mozart, with the Sinfonia Concertante already behind him, could not contemplate so undemocratic a solution, and made both parts equally eloquent...
