MALCOLM MILLER enjoys the Meitar Ensemble in concert and reports on the conference 'Art Musics of Israel'
Soundscapes of Israel, a superb concert by the Meitar Ensemble on 31 March 2011, offered a fascinating window into the unfamiliar world of new music through a string of works composed within the last twenty years, including five UK premières and one world première. Meitar, under the leadership of the group's founder-director, the pianist Amit Dolberg, is one of the most successful Israeli new music ensembles, since its inception in 2004, giving hundreds of concerts in Israel and worldwide. Meitar has won many awards for its championing of Israeli music, having released three CDs to date and made regular broadcasts. There was a brief UK visit some years ago, but this was the ensemble's UK debut at a major concert hall. The entire concert was dedicated to the memory of Erich Schulhof (1908-1942), a pianist in Terezin who perished in Auschwitz in 1942, aged 34...
