Le Comte Ory is Gioacchino Rossini's next-to-last opera. Like The Barber of Seville and many of his other most successful works, it is a comedy. Unlike the other comedies, it was written in French. The composer moved to Paris after the Venice premiere of Semiramide and a lucrative trip to England. In 1824, he became music director of the Théâtre des Italiens and had a contract from the French king that promised to pay for five new operas...
