A Wonderful Rendition
Donizetti's 'Lucia di Lammermoor', enjoyed by MARIA NOCKIN
In 1819, Scottish writer, Sir Walter Scott published a historical novel called The Bride of Lammermoor. It was based on a true story from the seventeenth century that had been related to him as a child by his great-aunt. According to her, Janet Dalrymple, the daughter of famous jurist James Dalrymple, fell in love with Archibald, the third Lord Rutherford, but her parents forced her to marry another man. After the wedding her mind seems to have snapped and she attacked her bridegroom. Scott added many more twists and turns to the story and updated it by a few decades...
