Since his 2009 appointment as head of the New York Philharmonic, Alan Gilbert has quickly become one of the city's biggest advocates of classical music. His programming choices, which include a New Year's Eve concert on 31 December 2009 that was rooted entirely in American Classical music and Musical Theater and a fully staged production of a dark comic opera by Ligeti, certainly show a desire to test the limits of convention, if not necessarily to flout them. And if the sold-out performance of Ligeti's opera Le Grand Macabre is any indication of the power of this music to attract newer, younger audiences, he has succeeded...
