Emphasis on Personalities
John Adams' 'Nixon in China', reviewed by MARIA NOCKIN
On 12 February 2011, the Metropolitan Opera transmitted John Adams' opera Nixon in China live in high definition to cinemas around the world. For many Arizona opera goers, it was a totally new experience and the audience at the Desert Ridge Theater in the far north reaches of Phoenix was made up of the city's more adventurous opera goers. Several of the people to whom I spoke had seen works by the American composer in other cities where they live for all but the coldest months of the year. One of the great benefits of the Met's HD offerings is that it can afford to send us operas that our local companies would be hard pressed to sell.
