Glazunov shot quickly to mastery and fame under the musical guidance of Rimsky-Korsakov and sponsorship of Belyayev, so that his First Symphony, written at the age of sixteen, progressed speedily from St Petersburg to Liszt's Weimar. It may be that he will always be best remembered for reconstructing from a few hearings at the keyboard the overture to Borodin's Prince Igor and for much subsequent work on the opera. His memory was phenomenal and facility enviable. Appointed to the directorship of the St Petersburg Conservatoire in 1905, he was maintained there well into the Soviet period. He also had the honour of being declared an honorary Jew by the Nazis...
