Spanish pianist Javier Perianes plays Schubert, Chopin, Debussy and Falla, heard by MIKE WHEELER
Is Schubert's first set of Impromptus, D899, one big work or four separate ones? To judge from his performance in Nottingham Royal Concert Hall's Piano Series (Nottingham, UK, 16 January 2011), Spanish pianist Javier Perianes seems to regard them as forming not just a single work but a starkly tragic one. Taking the opening piece slower than I think I've ever heard it before, he emphasised an unremittingly dark tone, after which the normally sparkling second Impromptu couldn't help but sound subdued...
