Vivaldi wrote some twenty oboe concertos, and half the eight on this disc are arrangements in the best tradition of the period. Vivaldi was not the magpie composer Handel has proved to be, lifting from his own music or that of others whatever might be convenient to the task in hand. Five hundred concertos made an admirable basic bank, and solo parts could easily be adapted to suit the requirements of whatever gifted pupil at the Pietà needed most urgently to display her talents...
